Talk – Russian Ikons: Images of the Divine
Sunday 25th February, 2pm
In 1898 Annie and Merton Russell-Cotes travelled to Russia. In ‘Letters to Russia’, a collection of the letters she wrote to her daughter, Ella, Annie describes the many fascinating places they visited and some of the items they purchased, such as the beautiful ikon now in our Green Room
In Russian Orthodox Christianity an ikon is a representation of a holy personage or event, through which religious stories and teachings are disseminated to the faithful. Join volunteer Elke Stead as she discusses the history of Russian ikon painting, and why they have played such an important role in the everyday life of Russian people.
Entry to the talk is £2, or free for Friends of the Russell-Cotes
