A recent survey of the ceramics at the Russell-Cotes, bequeathed by the founders, has uncovered quite a few surprises.
While several pieces look authentic from a distance, a closer inspection has revealed they are 19th century reproductions. Did this bother Merton or Annie? Were they serious ceramic collectors, seeking authentic 18th century specimens, or was the decorative effect the goal?
Prof. Anne Anderson discusses whether they were duped by unscrupulous dealers, or aware of the origins of their pieces, simply hoping to fill their many china cabinets.
