Royal Academy Antics: Mr Punch goes to the Summer Exhibition
The annual Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy presented a great spectacle. The Punch cartoonists made the most of Picture or Show Sunday, the Selection and Hanging, Varnishing Days, the Private View, the Banquet and once the exhibition opened, the gallery-goers.
This ritual was concluded with a formal reception initially called the Conversazione and later known as the Soirée.
Prof. Anne Anderson looks at Punch’s irreverent coverage which reveals the ‘cut and thrust’ behind the Summer Exhibition, which was deemed by many to be the shop-window of a privileged coterie.
