Bag and girdle
This brown material bag was worn by the popular stage performer Ellen Terry while playing Marguerite in Goethe’s ‘Faust’, during a Henry Irving production at the Lyceum Theatre in 1886.
Another Irving production at the Lyceum Theatre, this time in December 1888, saw Ellen Terry wearing the rope girdle, or cincture, while performing as Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth. This production ran for one hundred and fifty-one nights.
