Butterfly fire screen
This fire screen has a small label stuck to the inside on the lower left-hand side giving the name of the taxidermist. It reads ‘Preserved by H. Burton 120 Wardour Street, London W.’ Henry Burton was one of the most successful of London taxidermists who operated out of premises in Soho. His work was sought after by a number of eminent Victorian zoologists. Much of his work featured tropical birds but this unusual example, showcases a large number of largely exotic butterflies and insects.
The fire screen was donated to the museum in 1966 by a private donor.
