David Garrick Reading ‘Macbeth’
David Garrick was an English actor, playwright, theatre manager and producer. Famous for his portrayal of Shakespeare’s characters, he reportedly delivered Macbeth’s famous soliloquy 37 times on the London stage between 1744 and 1768. Thomas Wilkes, in A General View of the Stage (1759), described the manner of Garrick’s performance, specifically his unrivalled ability to capture and communicate Macbeth’s psychological turmoil.
Robert Edge Pine was an English portrait and historical painter, born in London. He was active in the society of artists and learned gentlemen in London. He travelled to America around 1784 and remained there until his death in 1788.
