Ellen Terry as Iolanthe, 1880
This large decorative plate shows a head and shoulders portrait of the actress Ellen Terry by Ellen Graham Stow. Terry played the role of Iolanthe in the play ‘King Rene’s Daughter’ at the Lyceum Theatre in 1880. The play was written by the Danish play-write Henrik Hertz in 1845 and is a fictionalised account of the life of Yolande of Lorraine, daughter of René of Anjou. The plate has a label attached to its reverse for ‘Howell and James’ Art-Pottery Exhibition 1881’.
