Female Figure
This figure is probably Clio, the Muse of History, as she holds a book and her basket is filled with scrolls, all attributes of the daughter of Zeus.
This sculpture was previously displayed on the roof of the portico of the first Rothesay Museum, which opened in 1963 as an extension of the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum. The Rothesay Museum was demolished in 1971 to make room for car parking and the fly-over bridge. The museum then moved across the road, however, this was demolished in 1985 for a car park and the collections, like this sculpture, were returned to the Russell-Cotes.
Edgar George Papworth Jnr was an English sculptor who came from a family long connected with stonework. He showed more than fifty portrait busts at the Royal Academy between 1852 and 1882.
