Girl Playing Knucklebones

This sculpture is a reduced copy of an antique Roman marble (now in the Altes Museum, Berlin) of a young girl playing knucklebones. The Berlin sculpture is itself a Roman copy of a Hellenistic original which was discovered in Rome in 1732. She is shown wearing a chiton, a classical period tunic which fastens at the shoulder. She has a melon coiffure hairstyle, drawn into a flat knot at the back of her head, from which two single strands have come loose and curl around her temples.
