Henry Irving as Shylock
Henry Irving’s 1879 production of The Merchant of Venice was as revolutionary as his Hamlet. It ran for 250 nights, and was the play that Irving presented in 1889 when he was summoned to perform for Queen Victoria. Shylock was also the final role he played at the Lyceum Theatre in 1902.
