This woodblock print, by William Nicholson, shows French actress Sara Bernhardt, presumably in character. Underneath the image is written ‘To Sir Merton Russell Cotes with the kind wishes of Sara Bernhardt’.
William Nicholson was a British painter and printmaker. He studied at the Herkomer School of Art Bushey, where he met his future wife, Mable Pryde. He used many printing techniques, including woodcut, wood-engraving and lithography. He also worked as an illustrator as well as an author of Children’s books and a designer for the theatre.
