Sir Henry Irving’s Makeup Box

Clearly labelled as such, and in a very well used state, this is Sir Henry Irving’s make-up box from the Lyceum Theatre in London. Although well used, Irving did not rely entirely on make-up, particularly when playing several characters in the same production. Instead, he would use expression and body language for his characterisation. As some Victorian make-up items contained harmful chemicals, this was a sensible approach to take!
