Sugar sifter
This urn shaped gilt sugar sifter was gifted to Annie and Merton on their Golden Wedding Anniversary, on 1 February 1920. It was gifted to the couple by Scottish artist Louis Bosworth Hurt, who features strongly in the Russell-Cotes original art collection.
The lid of the sifter is decorated with a diamond shape lattice work pattern, allowing the sugar to fall from the sifter when upended. Sugar sifters were used at the table to sprinkle powdered sugar over fruit, puddings or cakes.
The sugar sifter displayed is one of the many gifts which Annie and Merton received on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Other gifts displayed, include a silver gilt cup from their grandchildren; a flower bowl from Sir Henry Solomon Wellcome and a silver gilt goblet cup and cover from Judge Frederick Philbrick KC.
