Online Talk: Paint and Passion: Going to the Heart of Pre-Raphaelite Art
Join historian and author Kirsty Stonell Walker as she explores Pre-Raphaelite Art and Love on Valentine’s Day.
The story of Pre-Raphaelite Art includes a lot of romance. From the subjects they chose to the lives they led, Pre-Raphaelite artists knew all about lust, love and loss. Inspired by the poetry of Tennyson, they celebrated courtly romances; through Shakespeare, they brought us images of star-crossed lovers; in myths and legends, they were inspired by some of the most bold and dramatic love stories of all time. However, there was also betrayal, cruelty and loss, both on the canvas and in real life.
From the earliest Pre-Raphaelite works to the followers in the 20th century, love has figured large and this will be a celebration of Pre-Raphaelite romance. The Russell-Cotes contains many of these, which is fitting as a tribute to the love of Merton for Annie Russell-Cotes, so we’ll be including highlights from the collections.
